Dismounting of the Aeolus II in seconds
On 13.2.2008, at 3 p.m., the final seconds of the AEOLUS II in Wilhelmshaven began. An explosive charge placed at the bottom of the concrete tower brought the AEOLUS down within seconds. Tilting backwards with the back of the nacelle first, it collapsed on the ground raising a huge fountain of mud. On the nearby DEWI test site, several wind turbines were standing still, as if wanting to show their sympathy. Taking a closer look, however, they obviously served as a welcome viewing platform for technicians of the wind turbine manufacturers who had been informed of the event. Just before the detonation, the flaps opened and the nacelles were turned into a position for the best view.
The history of the AEOLUS began in autumn 1993, when it was installed in the Jade Windpark in Wilhelmshaven next to the two MONOPTEROS 50 which were later replaced by two Enercon E-66 and one E-112. With a 92 m high tower of prestressed concrete and an installed capacity of 3 MW, the AEOLUS II was one of the largest wind turbines world-wide at that time. The nacelle including rotor had a weight of 162 tons, a single rotor blade of 38.8 m length weighed approximately 9 tons.
The AEOLUS II is a further development of AELUS I, a prototype of which had been installed from 1983 to 1990 on the Swedish island of Gotland.
