Brazil: Creating a Test Site for CFD-Model Verification

Wind energy application is internationally seen as a very fast growing energy sector, gaining increasing importance in the electric energy supply of many countries. Reduction of CO2-emissions, limited conventional energy resources and the reduction of energy imports are the main political drivers of this development. With today’s very large wind turbines new areas for the use of wind energy are opened up, which are very often no longer near the windy and flat coastal sites but more often in the inlands of the continents with their mostly much higher complex surface structures. Whereas wind turbines become more and more mature despite the challenges caused by the fast size development during the past two decades, the applied method to predict the possible energy generation of future wind farms, the so-called micrositing, is somewhat behind the accuracy demanded by the financing institutes and the investors. Under the aspect that in multi-megawatt wind farms many millions of Euros are invested by investors, mainly based on the annual energy yields calculated, a further development of the micrositing tools is more than necessary.
