Wind Energy Use in Germany

As of 31.12.2003 15,387 wind turbines (WT) with a rated power of 14,609.07 MW were installed in Germany. The average installed power per WT therefore is 949.44 kW. During 2003 alone, 1,703 WTs with a rated power of 2,644.53 MW were installed in Germany. Compared to wind energy use in the same period of the previous year [1] there was a decrease in newly installed turbines of approx. 26.6 %, and the newly installed power went down by 602.43 MW or approx. 18.3 %. Compared with the previous year, the average rated power per wind turbine went up by approx. 11 % and reached 1,552.87 kW in 2003. Wind turbine manufacturers also informed us about the turbines removed and replaced (Repowering). According to this information, 68 WTs with a rated power of 29.68 MW were removed in 2003 and replaced by 46 bigger plants with a total of 80.75 MW. The figures on removal and repowering should be regarded with a certain caution, since it is not absolutely sure that all the cases were reported to us.
