LiDAR Services

Reduce project risks through state-of-the-art LiDAR services
DEWI Group – a UL company – serves the wind industry with on-site Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) measurements

DEWI Group now provides measurement services using LiDAR technology. Wind measurement with LiDAR can avoid long administrative approval procedures that are normally required for a mast erection and can lower overall project risks by providing additional valuable information, e.g. for tall hub heights, for large size projects requiring several measurement locations, or for locations where no measurement mast can be erected.
 

LiDAR is an optical remote sensing technique that measures both vertical and horizontal wind speeds and direction based on laser signals backscattered by particles in the atmosphere. The DEWI Group implements this state-of-the-art technology to provide wind farm developers, operators, owners and investors, as well as manufacturers, with the following services:

Wind Measurement (WM)

During the development of a wind farm, the measurement strategy with a LiDAR device can be defined and performed by DEWI experts, including:

  • Choice of measurement location(s) to minimise horizontal extrapolation uncertainty
  • LIDAR verification against a met mast prior to its on-site installation (if needed) On-site installation and commissioning of the measurement device
  • Measurement campaign follow-up: daily download, weekly check, monthly reporting to optimise data availability and consistency

This type of measurement strategy is valuable for:

  • Wind gradient evaluation up to the hub height
  • Absolute measurement values up to the hub height

These services are carried out either with your LiDAR system or with one of the LiDAR systems that DEWI offers for rent.

Energy Yield Assessment (EYA)

The DEWI Group offers comprehensive Energy Yield Assessment services at the pre-construction stage, including:

  • LiDAR data processing
  • Integration of the LiDAR data in the wind resource assessment: wind gradient evaluation and/or use of absolute LiDAR measurement values
  • Long-term correction of the on-site available data
  • Wind flow modelling: onshore projects (WASP / CFD), offshore projects (mesoscale model)
  • Wind farm efficiency calculation
  • Calculation of the expected energy yield (gross p50) under consideration of systematical losses (net p50) and the respective uncertainties and exceedance probabilities  (p75, p90, p99 values).

Power Curve Verification (PCV)

The DEWI Group performs power curve measurements with ground-based LiDAR in accordance with the upcoming IEC 61400-12-1 Ed.2. The DEWI experts are also able to carry out power curve measurements with nacelle-mounted LiDAR. 

In general, the DEWI Group offers the entire range of wind turbine power curve verification services to ensure the equipment’s performance meets IEC 61400-12-1 and MEASNET procedures:

  • Site assessment to determine site complexity (to see if site calibration is required or not) and define the test details including measurement location
  • Warranty check to analyse the contractual conditions for PCV
  • Site calibration for complex sites after financial close
  • PCV according to the current standard

LiDAR Verification

Prior to measuring with a remote sensing device on a site where no measurement mast is available, the current discussion in IEC expert teams has led to the requirement that the LiDAR is verified against a high-quality measurement mast of suitable height equipped with calibrated cup anemometers before being installed on-site.

DEWI Group offers this service, as well, providing traceability of the wind speed and wind direction signal.
