Before any generating plant can be connected to the grid, the system operator normally requires a certificate, which in turn requires the measurement of electrical characteristics and increasingly also verification of the plant’s Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) capability. DEWI offers LVRT testing and measuring services to determine the electrical characteristics and grid compatibility of wind turbines, solar inverters and other generation units/systems.
 

If a generating unit becomes disconnected from the grid during a voltage dip caused by grid faults, it can weaken the overall stability of the grid, even causing a ripple effect of instability. In the case of transient voltage instability of 1-2 seconds, Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) is required to keep the unit/plant connected and maintain grid integrity.

As alternative forms of energy become more prevalent, generation units such as wind turbines, photovoltaic inverters and combined heat and power systems (CHP) are increasingly being held to the same electricity grid codes governing conventional power plants. Tests are typically conducted for prototypes and referenced to IEC standards and other national grid codes.

Specialised tests reveal the behaviour of the generation unit during LVRT dips, and measure compliance with respective requirements, including local grid codes.

DEWI operates voltage dip-testing equipment for small units up to approximately 3.5 MW, for medium voltage up to 20 kV, and generation units up to 10 MW at voltages up to 35 kV.

DEWI also gives manufacturers the choice of having their generating unit evaluated and certified for compliance with individual or multiple specific grid interconnection standards and codes, including high voltage and zero voltage ride through.
